Kidney Health: What a Simple Urine Test Reveals

What Do Your Kidneys Do?

Your kidneys act as the body's natural filter system. They clean your blood, remove waste, and balance your fluids. When your body is under stress, the filters can get slightly damaged and start letting things leak through that should stay in the body.

The Secret Leak: Albumin

Albumin is a healthy protein in your blood. A healthy kidney filter keeps this protein in the blood. If your filters start getting worn down, tiny amounts of this protein leak into your urine. This leak is called microalbuminuria. Catching this tiny leak early is like finding a small leak in a roof before the whole ceiling falls down.

How to Get Tested

Your doctor can run a simple test called the Urine Albumin-to-Creatinine Ratio (UACR). It is a basic urine test that you can do in a few minutes.

  • A low score means your filters are working great.
  • A slightly elevated score means it is time to look at your diet, blood pressure, and daily habits to protect your filters.
